Families of Older Adults who Use 「Individualized Support Service for Older Adults」 Examined Through Case File Analysis

Abstract

|
This study started with the recognition of the lack of discussions on families who are important to the life of older adults in research related to elderly care. The purpose of the study is to propose the need for practice considering the elderly’s family in the elderly care services and related research topics. To this end, the study investigated what roles families had played in older adult’s lives in the service provision process from the perspective of social workers in charge of the 「Individualized Support Service for Older Adults」. As a result of analyzing 90 cases using the case file analysis method, the relationship between the elderly and the family, and the family’s behavior toward the elderly, the appearance of the family in the life of the elderly is divided into four categories: 1) family (children) caring for the elderly, 2) family (children) indifferent to and neglect of the elderly, 3) the elderly having a hard time due to family conflicts and caring for adult children, 4) the elderly and their families (including spouses and children) being disconnected for long time. Based on the research results, the family-related issues encountered by social workers in the process of providing care services were summarized, and four topics that require future research and in-depth discussion were proposed as follows; 1) studies on other types of families other than family in the caregiving role, 2) in-depth studies on the phenomenon of elder neglect, 3) the necessity of education for the family-centered practice among service providers in the field of the eldery care, and 4) the discussion on the identity, function, and limitation of the elderly care services as the social care.
